Sketchbook Assignment for May 2012

Every month you are required to complete a sketchbook assignment. This gives you a chance to practice your art skills; the more you do something the better you become. This month you do not have a choice of assignments as it is practice for our current unit. Sketchbooks are worth 15 % of your final mark! Please keep them up to date. You can complete this assignment during class time if you are finished early; if not they are homework.

New definition

Drapery - a towel, shirt, or blanket draped around or on another object to create lots of wrinkles. 

Project- Practice Shading

Try several studies of drapery focusing on shapes of folds and creases and the shadows that are created by them. Keep in mind the various ways of shading we learned in class (hatching, smudging, cross hatching and stippling).

This project is due for the grade 7-2 class on May 10. All future due dates will differ from the other class due to the delay.

WHAT IT IS A CONTOUR DRAWING?
Contour means "outline" and is comprised of simple lines that represent the outside and inside edges of objects. Contour drawings do not use shading.
Project:
Choose an interesting object with many edges. Study your object closely. Start by drawing the outside edges of the object then fill in the inside edges. Use the entire page. Your drawing should take 45 minutes.

WHAT IT IS BLIND CONTOUR?

Contour means "outline" and is comprised of simple lines that represent the outside edges of objects. Blind Contour is a drawing method that follows specific rules on how to draw the contour lines.

RULES:

1) Contour is made with a single, continuous line. In blind contour, every line is connected. In other words, the pencil never leaves the paper to start a line somewhere else on the page. If you have to start a line somewhere else on the paper do not lift the pencil, instead trail the pencil on the paper. Blind Contour drawings often have unnecessary lines crossing all over the page.

2) Deformity is okay. In blind contour the artist DOES NOT look at his/her drawing on paper until they are finished. The artist looks only at his/her subject so deformity is bound to happen. This is an exercise in looking and irregularities make the drawing looks more interesting.

3) Use the whole sketchbook page. A common mistake in blind contour is to make the drawing too small; use your hand to feel the edges of your paper to correct the sizing or make the drawing bigger (in your mind) than you think you are drawing it.

Project:

You need to make THREE blind contour drawings. You will do each drawing on a separate sketchbook page and the drawing must fill the entire page.

Drawing one:

Do a thirty minute blind contour sketch of an object from your room. Do not take your eyes of your subject! Draw every edge, interior and exterior.

Drawing Two:

Do a thirty minute blind contour sketch of a person or animal. You may use a photograph if needed. Include elements from the surrounding room such the chair they are sitting in or what is behind them.

Draw a fifteen minute blind contour of a kitchen utensil or appliance.

Every month you will be required to do sketchbook assignments. This gives you a chance to practice your art skills; the more you do something the better you become. Some months you will get a choice of assignments, other months you will be required to complete a specific assignment. Sketchbooks are due at the end every month. Sketchbooks are worth 15% of your final mark! Please keep them up to date. You can complete these assignments during class time if you are finished early; if you do not finish early they are homework.

Complete one of the following:

1. Make a DETAILED drawing of your eye and the area around it. Include everything you see when observing closely in clear, even lighting. Your drawing must be realistic, 8”x 10” inches in size and observed from real life or a photo of a real person.


2. Research the elements and parts of a coat of arms and create a coat of arms or crest for your family or organization. Your drawing must fill the full page of your sketchbook and include colour. Please keep in mind that the colours used in a coat of arms have are symbolic and meaningful. The following websites have information on the construction of a coat of arms:

7-2 Sketchbook assignment #1 - October

Your first sketchbook assignment is due on Novemeber 9th, no exceptions. You are expected to complete one of the two activites.

1. Stream of consciousness drawing- doodling with a purpose.
2. Draw a word in the shape of the object it describes. All assignments must be the full size of an 8x10" sketchbook.

Your first sketchbook assignment is due on Novemeber 14th, no exceptions. You are expected to complete one of the two activites.

All assignments must be the full size of an 8x10" sketchbook.

First project 2011
Grade 7 students are currently working on thier portfoilo projects. Assigned homework is now due. Students must bring in three images to use as a resource for thier current project. Please bring the following items to ALL classes:
1. Pencil
2. Ruler
3. Eraser
4. Pencil Leads
5. Scissors
6. Glue Stick
7. Ultra Fine Sharpie
8. Fine Sharpie
9. Sketchbook/ book of unlined paper

We are always looking for plastic containers, ice cream containers, meat trays, baby food jars and crafting supplies!

Final Report

Grade 7-1 and 7-2 groups have 2 projects that must be completed since the last report card. These projects must be submitted by June 14th or will receive marks of zero.

The projects are:

1. Mask and Poster Project: Students made a mask for a group or tribe of their choice, as well as a poster representing a person from the chosen group.

2. Sock Monster or Comic: Students had a choice to make a sock monster or a comic. The sock monster is a creature made from socks and sewed together. The other choice is to make a comic, illustrated and accompanied with a small story for each panel. This must be coloured and carefully created.

for your next project

For your next project you will need to bring in a shoe box ( or a similar sized box) and any objects or materials you may want to use in constructing your resturant models.

We are currently working on our contour projects. If you are absent from class it is your responsibility to make up missed work.

To date you should have your portfolio and outline project one completed. I have done up kits for those students who are out sick, please see me if you are missing work.
